Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi) is one of my favorite danmei novels, and I honestly give it a perfect 10/10.
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is one of the most famous and beloved authors in the danmei community. The popularity of this novel is undeniable, especially after it was adapted into the live-action drama The Untamed. However, as a reader, I believe the original novel itself is where the true magic lies.
From the very first chapter to the final page, this story completely captured my attention. Once I started reading, it was almost impossible to stop because every chapter brought new mysteries, emotions, and unforgettable moments.
In this review, I won’t reveal too much about the plot. Instead, I want to share my personal feelings and why this novel has left such a deep impression on me.
The storyline of Mo Dao Zu Shi is incredibly well-written. The plot is complex but logical, with mysteries that slowly unfold and connect perfectly. Every detail has its own meaning, and the author’s storytelling ability is truly impressive.
What makes this novel special is not only the fascinating cultivation world, but also the depth of every character. The main characters are both outstanding in their own ways.
Wei Wuxian (Wei Ying), the protagonist, is a unique character who completely breaks the typical image of a powerful cultivator. He is known as the “Yiling Patriarch” and is feared by many people as a demonic cultivator, but behind his playful personality is a kind-hearted person who always tries to protect others.
I especially love that Wei Wuxian is not written as a perfect hero. He makes mistakes, he suffers, and he carries many painful memories. Yet, even after experiencing betrayal and misunderstanding, he never loses his kindness and his belief in doing what is right.
Lan Wangji (Lan Zhan) is the perfect contrast to Wei Wuxian. He is quiet, serious, and follows strict rules, but beneath his cold appearance is a person with deep emotions and unwavering loyalty.
Their personalities are completely different, but somehow they fit together perfectly.
The supporting characters are also one of the highlights of the novel. Although there are many characters, each person has their own personality, background, and story. They are not simply there to support the main couple; they all contribute to making the world of Mo Dao Zu Shi richer and more realistic.
The most special thing about Mo Dao Zu Shi is the relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.
Their love is not a simple romance filled only with sweet moments. It is a relationship built through years of misunderstanding, separation, pain, and loss.
They do not fall in love because the other person is perfect. Lan Wangji loves Wei Wuxian even when the entire world turns against him. When everyone believes Wei Wuxian is a villain, Lan Wangji is the one person who still chooses to trust him. And after everything he has experienced, Wei Wuxian slowly realizes that among all the people who have entered his life, there is one person who has never abandoned him.
What makes their relationship so touching is that their love is not about possession or control. It is about understanding. It is about accepting someone completely — including their flaws, their pain, and their past.
One of the reasons I love this novel so much is that every character feels alive. Everyone carries their own memories, struggles, regrets, and dreams. The story does not only focus on the main couple; it also explores the emotions and choices of the people around them. Through these characters, readers can see that the world is not simply divided into good and evil.
Everyone has their own reasons. Everyone has their own pain. This is what makes Mo Dao Zu Shi more than just a fantasy cultivation story. It becomes a story about human nature, misunderstandings, forgiveness, and the importance of seeing the truth behind appearances.
Mo Dao Zu Shi is a novel that can make readers laugh because of Wei Wuxian’s humor and playful personality. It can also break your heart because of the tragedies and losses hidden behind the characters’ pasts.
But after all the sadness, what remains is a warm and comforting feeling.
Because in the end, people who truly care for each other will always find their way back to one another.
I think that is the reason why Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu has become one of the most memorable xianxia novels in the hearts of so many readers.

Personally, I prefer reading the original novel rather than watching adaptations because movies and dramas often have changes compared to the original story.
Mo Dao Zu Shi was adapted into the famous Chinese live-action drama The Untamed. The drama has gained huge popularity worldwide, and many people discovered this amazing story through the adaptation.
However, for me, the novel will always hold a special place because it allows readers to fully experience Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s journey exactly as the author intended.
